Chef notes

Way easier than apple pie because there's no crust to deal with. You just slice the apples, toss them with sugar and cinnamon, dump the oat topping on, and bake. The topping gets all crunchy and caramelized while the apples underneath get soft and bubbly. Really good with ice cream on top.

Ingredients

  • Apples
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Lemon juice
  • Rolled oats
  • All-purpose flour
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar

Recipe

  1. 1.Preheat oven to 350Β°F and lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  2. 2.Peel, core, and slice 5-6 apples (about 2Β½ lbs). Toss with 2 tbsp lemon juice, β…“ cup sugar, 1 tbsp flour, Β½ tsp cinnamon, and ΒΌ tsp nutmeg. Spread evenly in the baking dish and dot with ΒΌ cup cold butter cut into small cubes.
  3. 3.Mix 1ΒΌ cups rolled oats, ΒΎ cup flour, Β½ cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and Β½ tsp salt. Add ΒΎ cup cold butter cut into cubes and work together with your hands until crumbly with pea-sized clumps. Sprinkle over the apples.
  4. 4.Bake about 45 minutes until the top is golden brown and the juices are bubbling around the edges. Serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream.
